Archimandrite

Archimandrite Metodije was born on September 7, 1987, in Vranje, Serbia. He received his initial theological formation at the Seminary of the Serbian Orthodox Church dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius in Niš. From 2006 to 2009, he pursued his studies at the Moscow Theological Academy, and in 2010 he entered postgraduate studies at the Theological Institute San Bernardino in Venice, where he remained until 2012.

He received the monastic tonsure on September 1, 2012, at the Monastery of Saint Nicholas in Vranje, where in the same year he was appointed steward of this holy monastery. During the 2014/2015 academic year, he studied at the University of Paderborn in Germany, focusing on German language proficiency and attending theological lectures at the Johann Adam Möhler Institute for Ecumenics.

In addition to his obedience at the Monastery of Saint Nicholas, as a hieromonk he served in parish ministry, worked as a catechist, and coordinated religious education in the elementary and secondary schools of the Diocese of Vranje from 2012 to 2014. He was later elevated to the rank of syngellos and appointed Secretary of the Diocesan Administrative Board, where he served from 2015 to 2017.

During the 2017/2018 academic year, he continued his higher theological studies in Bologna, where he defended his master’s thesis at the Faculty of Theology of Emilia-Romagna on the topic “Saint Constantine – The First Christian Emperor.” The examination committee, composed of Prof. Dr. Valentino Bulgarelli (Dean of the Faculty), Prof. Dr. Davide Righi, and Prof. Dr. Enrico Morini, awarded his work the highest distinction magna cum laude probatus.

Upon his return to Serbia, on August 9, 2018, he was appointed rector of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Vranje, where he served until January 1, 2020. He was then elevated to the rank of archimandrite and appointed abbot of Prohor Pčinjski Monastery.

Archimandrite Metodije has also served as editor of various diocesan publications. He took an active role in the digital preservation of the cultural and spiritual heritage of Prohor Pčinjski Monastery, as well as in the organization of the exhibition “Orthodoxy – One Great Family.” He has participated in numerous theological and academic conferences. He speaks Russian, Italian, and German fluently, and has working proficiency in English. On the occasion of the 950th anniversary of the founding of Prohor Pčinjski Monastery (1070–2020), as abbot of the monastery he directed the organization and realization of the jubilee program. He authored the exhibition “The Spiritual and Cultural Heritage of Prohor Pčinjski Monastery”, which was presented throughout the Diocese of Vranje and in Belgrade, at the King Peter I House.

He is currently a doctoral student at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade. Since 2024, he has been serving as abbot of the Monastery of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos in Serbian Kovin, Hungary.
