Serbian Kovin

The Monastery of the Dormition of the Holy Mother of God in Serbian Kovin — often called the Serbian Kovin Monastery — is the oldest preserved Serbian Orthodox foundation on Hungarian soil and the only monastery of its kind in the country. Located on Csepel Island about 40 km south of Budapest, it has been a spiritual and cultural landmark for centuries.

According to tradition, the monastery’s origins date back to the Middle Ages and to Queen Helena of the Vukanović dynasty, while historical records point to the arrival of Serbian refugees in the 15th century who established it as their spiritual center. The church, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God with chapels of St John the Forerunner and Sts Cosmas and Damian, combines Gothic architecture with Orthodox interior decoration, frescoes and iconostasis — a rare blend that makes it unique in the wider European context.

Today the monastery is home to a small brotherhood led by Archimandrite Metodije, with monk and a deacon who continue the centuries-old tradition of worship and service. As the only Serbian Orthodox men’s monastery in Hungary, it preserves spiritual heritage, fosters the Serbian identity in the diaspora and welcomes pilgrims, researchers and visitors from all backgrounds.

Archimandrite Metodije (secular name: Miloš Marković) was born on September 7, 1987, in Vranje, Serbia.

Deacon Andraš Šoljom was born in 1972 in Budapest, Hungary. He is a mechanical engineer by education.

Nikola Džavrić was born in 1994 in Paraćin, Serbia, where he completed his elementary education.

Serbian Kovin

Organized groups are welcome to visit the Serbian Kovin Monastery with prior notice. By arrangement, guided tours of the monastery complex and museum can be provided in English, Hungarian, German, and Serbian.

The tour includes an introduction to the monastery’s history, a visit to the church and museum collection, and an opportunity for visitors to learn about the life and work of the monastic brotherhood. This service is not charged in the usual sense; instead, visitors are invited to make a voluntary donation for the needs of the monastery.

For groups coming from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, as well as organized Serbian groups from the diaspora, the brotherhood will gladly provide all necessary information about nearby accommodation and advice on the best travel arrangements. On such occasions, visitors have the opportunity not only to visit the monastery but also to become better acquainted with the rich Serbian culture and tradition in Hungary.
